Szczesny: ‘It Would Be Disrespectful Not to Listen to Barcelona’

Wojciech Szczesny, the Juventus goalkeeper, has acknowledged that it would be “disrespectful” not to consider Barcelona’s offer to come out of retirement. The Polish shot-stopper, who retired earlier this year at the age of 34, has now been approached by Barcelona to fill the void left by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is sidelined for eight months with a serious knee injury.

Despite stepping away from the game after Juventus’ unsuccessful attempts to transfer him to Saudi Arabian clubs, Szczesny has admitted that Barcelona’s interest has made him reconsider his decision.

“I have great respect for the history of Barcelona; it is one of the best clubs in the world,” Szczesny told Spanish media outlet Sport. “I understand the difficult situation caused by Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury, and I think it would be disrespectful for me not to consider this option.”

Reports from Spain indicate that Szczesny has already agreed on personal terms with Barcelona, and the formalities of the deal are expected to be completed soon. While there are still some legal details to iron out with Juventus, this opportunity presents an unexpected revival in Szczesny’s career, providing him with a chance to return to top-level football with a club of Barcelona’s stature.

This potential move would see Szczesny playing a crucial role for Barcelona as they navigate the 2024-25 season without their first-choice goalkeeper.
