Over the past number of years, Real Madrid have seen a number of veteran players depart the club for the next chapters of their careers and have replaced them by bringing in a new generation of highly talented players who will be expected to carry on the legacy of Los Blancos. Considering that they have won La Liga and are in the UEFA Champions League final, things are quite clearly going according to plan.
Names such as Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Casemiro and most recently Karim Benzema, all of whom were major players in Real Madrid’s success for the better part of the last decade have since departed for other leagues to play out the next chapters of their careers. But perhaps the most significant exit was that of Sergio Ramos.
The iconic centre-back and captain is no doubt a player who reached legendary status at Real Madrid. He would depart for PSG in the summer of 2021 after 16 years at Santiago Bernabeu.
Currently at Sevilla and set to be a free agent at the end of the season, many are wondering what the next step will be for the Spanish legend. And it looks like a move away from Europe is a real possibility.
Real Madrid legend in advanced talks to join MLS club
As reported by The Athletic, San Diego FC is in advanced talks with Ramos. A deal is not yet agreed or finalized, but the expectation is that the Spaniard would be a designated player if he signs.
After departing Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, Ramos signed a two-year deal with PSG where he had a somewhat up-and-down tenure. He then re-joined his boyhood club, Sevilla, but his current deal is set to run out this summer, with the MLS looking like a likely landing spot.
Recently the MLS has seen a number of high-profile players arrive. Players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Hugo Lloris are some of the most recent names to make the move to the United States, and adding Ramos would be another major boost for the league.
