Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has clarified the reasons behind Joao Felix’s loan move to AC Milan, emphasizing that “nothing happened” between them and that the decision was made in the interest of the team’s balance.
Felix’s departure on the final day of the transfer window sparked questions, especially since the Portuguese forward had only joined Chelsea in the summer on a seven-year contract. Just six months later, he was sent out on loan, leaving fans and pundits puzzled about why Chelsea made such a move after committing to him for the long term.
Ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup match against Brighton, Maresca addressed the situation in a press conference. When asked if there had been any behind-the-scenes incidents leading to Felix’s exit, he firmly denied any such claims.
“Nothing happened. Players train every day and want to play all of the games, but unfortunately, only 11 can start,” Maresca said. “We decided, all together, that it was a good option for him to leave.”
Some fans speculated that Felix had requested a transfer due to dissatisfaction with his role, but Maresca refuted this idea, insisting that the player never expressed any complaints.
“No, to be honest, he never complained. He has been very good with us, professional. It was just my decision,” the Chelsea boss explained.
While Maresca dismissed any issues regarding Felix’s attitude, he hinted at the real reason for the decision—Chelsea’s need for stronger defensive balance.
“I think we need defensive balance, and when you have so many attacking players, sometimes you can concede transitions and goals. I don’t like that.”
Felix’s style of play may not have aligned with the team’s defensive requirements, as he is known more for his attacking prowess than his defensive contributions. Some believe Maresca’s comments also subtly critique Chelsea’s squad structure, given the club’s tendency to sign numerous attacking players without prioritizing defensive midfielders.
Although there is no evidence of a conflict between Felix and Maresca, the situation raises concerns about Chelsea’s transfer strategy. Committing to Felix on a long-term contract only to loan him out shortly after suggests a lack of clarity in planning.
For now, Chelsea will focus on finding the right balance for the remainder of the season, while Felix looks to make his mark at AC Milan, where he has a fresh opportunity to shine.
