In a surprising shake-up to the U.S. Women’s National Basketball Team roster for the upcoming 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament, Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell has been named as a replacement for Dallas Wings standout Paige Bueckers.
The decision comes after Bueckers, who was initially selected alongside Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese for her senior national team debut, faced backlash over recent comments criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions in her home state of Minnesota. During an Unrivaled league event in Philadelphia, Bueckers became emotional while condemning what she described as “brutality” and “unacceptable” practices by ICE, stating that “innocent families are being broken apart” and “what’s going on is not OK.” The remarks, which drew praise from some for her advocacy and criticism from others who viewed them as politically divisive, reportedly led USA Basketball officials to reconsider her inclusion ahead of the March games in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
USA Basketball Managing Director expressed that the organization prioritizes unity and focus on competition during international play. “We respect players’ rights to personal views, but our roster decisions emphasize team cohesion and readiness,” a spokesperson said.
Mitchell, a proven scorer and key contributor for the Fever alongside Clark, steps in as a dynamic guard with international experience and a reputation for professionalism. The 2024 Olympian brings scoring punch and veteran poise to a roster already featuring Clark, Reese, Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Plum, and others.
Fans have mixed reactions, with some Fever supporters celebrating the nod for Mitchell while others question the timing. Bueckers has not commented publicly on the roster change.
The qualifiers run March 11-17, with the U.S. aiming to solidify their spot in the 2026 World Cup in Berlin. Mitchell’s addition strengthens the guard rotation as Team USA prepares for a high-stakes push.
