“I want him as my first signing. I have a vision for the team, and he fits perfectly.”

Liverpool has expressed significant interest in German international Florian Wirtz, who has been a key player under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Wirtz intends to stay with Leverkusen “for at least one more year,” despite the links to Liverpool. Romano stated, “Florian Wirtz has indicated that his current plan is to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, which aligns with my understanding – his focus is fully on Leverkusen and the upcoming Euros.”

“There are no ongoing negotiations, and sources close to Wirtz believe staying at Leverkusen for at least another year is the best option. In football, nothing is ever certain, but it’s quiet for now.”

The 20-year-old has already netted 28 goals in 36 matches across all competitions for Leverkusen this season.

Wirtz’s future seems closely linked to his manager. In February, Christian Falk reported for CaughtOffside: “Florian Wirtz (20) is indispensable for Alonso. He enjoys complete freedom under his coach. For Wirtz, it’s clear: if Alonso remains, he will stay beyond 2024. However, if Alonso joins Liverpool in the summer, Wirtz might also make the move.”

This scenario presents an intriguing prospect for Liverpool fans, especially if Alonso were to replace Jurgen Klopp.

It remains uncertain whether Liverpool would be willing to fork out a significant transfer fee for Wirtz, given the club’s other transfer priorities. Nevertheless, this is a situation worth monitoring closely.
