In a recent media interaction, Girona’s sporting director, Quique Carcel, confirmed that the club had made an official approach during the summer transfer window to sign Barcelona defender Eric Garcia. The 23-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Girona, played a pivotal role in their remarkable top-four finish in La Liga.
Speculation grew over the summer regarding Garcia’s possible return to Girona, particularly as Barcelona faced difficulties registering Dani Olmo. However, injuries in the Barcelona squad led coach Hansi Flick to block Garcia’s exit, ensuring he stayed at Camp Nou.
Carcel spoke about the pursuit of Garcia, explaining Girona’s interest in the Spanish international. “We wanted Eric to return because he would have strengthened our squad and enhanced the coach’s tactical setup. He would have been a significant signing, which is why we approached Barça for him,” Carcel revealed.
Despite Girona’s intentions, the deal did not materialize. Carcel acknowledged Barcelona’s reluctance to let the versatile defender leave, adding, “I think they didn’t want him to go. It’s a situation they understand better. We tried, but it wasn’t possible.”
Romeu and Pau Victor Transfers
Although Garcia remained in Barcelona, Girona successfully worked on other deals with the club. Oriol Romeu returned to Girona on loan from Barcelona, while Pau Victor moved in the opposite direction to join Hansi Flick’s squad after a successful loan spell at Barça Atletic.
Carcel expressed satisfaction with the return of Romeu, stating, “Oriol has always been crucial for Girona, both on and off the pitch. Last season, he seized a great opportunity at Barça, but we closely monitored his situation, knowing he could help us again. His desire to return played a significant role in making the deal happen.”
Regarding Pau Victor, Carcel commented, “Pau had an offer from Barcelona’s first team, and he wanted to take it. I’m happy for him after the excellent year he had last season.”
Barcelona and Girona are set to face each other this weekend at Montilivi, though Romeu will be unable to play due to a ‘fear clause’ in his loan agreement.
