Barcelona set for €1.2 million windfall as former defender nears Ligue 1 switch

It has been a very silent winter transfer window for Barcelona thus far. The Catalans have not been able to rope in any new names given their financial situation, nor have there been any exits from the Catalan capital.

All eyes in Barcelona, thus, are towards the summer transfer window when the management are looking towards a massive overhaul. However, that will not be possible unless the club manage to make some big sakes to clear space on the FFP front.

The unexpected income

According to reports from SPORT, money has started filling the coffers of Barcelona owing to the transfer of Sergio Akieme.

The player, who signed for Almeria from Barcelona in July 2021, is closing in on a move to Stade de Reims in a deal worth over €10 million.

The Blaugranas hold 12% of the player’s rights, implying that Barcelona will receive at least €1.2 million from the aforementioned transfer.

For a side-neck-deep in financial crisis, an income of €1.2 million does arrive as big news. Yet, it will not be sufficient for the club to make any signings in the ongoing winter transfer market, nor will it be enough alone for any moves in the summer.

A profitable manoeuvre

Barcelona signed Akieme from Rayo Vallecano under Ramon Planes in a deal worth just €300,000.

After a brief stint for Barça Atletic, he signed for Almeria in a deal worth €3.5 million in addition to Barcelona holding on to 12% of his rights.

The Blaugrana, thus, have made a solid profit from the player’s situation.

Considering the newly activated €1.2 million, the Catalans have roped in close to €5 million from Akieme’s transfers over the years and will hope for many other passive income streams to open up before the summer transfer window.
