Xavi’s stance on Man Utd job confirmed as Erik ten Hag is finally sacked as Red Devils’ boss

Xavi Hernandez’s position on his next job has been confirmed amid speculation he could take over at Manchester United after Erik ten Hag was sacked.

Xavi’s wife has sent social media into a frenzy after posting a picture of her husband and son with the latter wearing a Manchester United home kit.

The former Barcelona boss has been strongly linked to the manager’s job at United, who officially announced the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday.

The Red Devils lost to West Ham on Sunday and sit 14th in the Premier League table after their opening nine fixtures in a disastrous start to the 2024-25 season.

There had been massive speculation over Ten Hag’s future – and United’s hierarchy finally decided to act this week – with attentions now turning to who may come in.

Xavi is thought to be a serious option – and just one day before Ten Hag’s sacking was confirmed – his wife Nuria Cunillera uploaded a photo on her Instagram story of the legendary ex-midfielder sat with their son.

Xavi’s son is seen playing with football stickers while wearing a United home shirt, which has led fans to believe that his dad could soon be coming in as manager.

United have already held talks with Barcelona icon Xavi about replacing Ten Hag, according to reports.

It should be noted, though, that Xavi is not the only manager linked to United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will consider a number of other candidates for the role.

Xavi is currently 8/1 to become the next permanent United manager, according to bookmakers Ladbrokes, behind Ruud van Nistelrooy (4/6) and Ruben Amorim (4/1).

Xavi has been out of work since being sacked by Barcelona in May and is keen to make a return to management.

At the start of 2024 Xavi said he was going to leave his position at the Nou Camp but was then persuaded to stay by Barcelona bosses.

But it was decided he would move on following a difficult period on and off the pitch, with Barca appointing Germany’s Hansi Flick as his replacement.

Xavi was a mainstay in the great Barcelona team for well over a decade and won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during his celebrated spell at the club.
