It has been revealed that Manchester City striker Phil Foden named his pet dog ‘Carabao’ after the League Cup’s sponsors.
According to The Athletic, the Stockport-born midfielder purchased and named the French bulldog the day after the 2020 League Cup Final victory over Aston Villa.
Since breaking into the City first team in 2017, Foden has had tremendous success in the tournament, winning four straight titles, a feat accomplished only by Liverpool in the early 1980s.
He also scored as Manchester City rallied from behind to defeat Wycombe Wanderers 6-1 at The Etihad Stadium last night.
Foden is not the only Premier League player who has a canine companion. Danny Ings, Jesse Lingard, and Marcus Rashford have all been photographed with a dog or two.
The Sun also reported last year that many members of the upper crust had purchased Chaperone K9 protection dogs. Manchester United player Paul Pogba, ex-England internationals John Terry and Jermaine Jenas, and West Ham veteran Mark Noble are among his clients.
“We were so impressed with our first Chaperone K9,” he told the newspaper. “We had to get a second.”
While these canines are tougher than Foden’s pet, do they have the same name as Carabao?
I have my doubts.
