Steven Tyler has long been known for living on the edge, both onstage and off. Now, one of his daughters is shedding new light on a famous part of his rock-and-roll image. During a recent podcast appearance, Mia Tyler described her father’s past as “extremely wild” and shared a surprising explanation for why the Aerosmith frontman famously decorated his microphone with flowing scarves throughout his career.
Mia, 46, spoke alongside her sister, actress Liv Tyler, 47, on an episode of Sibling Revelry, hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson. While reflecting on their father’s years as a global rock star, Mia claimed the scarves were not simply a fashion statement. According to her, Tyler used them as a way to conceal pills while performing, allowing him to discreetly access substances during live shows.
She went on to say that the scarves were only part of the strategy. Mia alleged that Tyler also had small pockets sewn into his clothing, making it easier for him to hide and retrieve whatever he was taking while onstage. The claims paint a candid picture of the excess that surrounded the band during its peak years. Aerosmith’s representatives were contacted for comment but did not immediately respond.
Tyler’s struggles with substance abuse have been publicly documented over the years. After maintaining sobriety for roughly a decade, he relapsed in 2022 following foot surgery that required pain management. At the time, Aerosmith announced that he had voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program to focus on his health, forcing the band to cancel several Las Vegas residency dates. Tyler has previously acknowledged that while drugs once seemed to fuel his creativity, sobriety ultimately allowed him to reach his full potential.
In more recent years, health challenges continued to impact the band. In September 2023, Tyler suffered a serious vocal cord injury that led to internal bleeding during a New York performance. Despite months of medical treatment and rehabilitation, he was unable to fully recover. By August of the following year, Aerosmith made the emotional decision to retire from touring altogether, citing the permanent damage to their frontman’s voice and bringing an era of rock history to a close.
