Manly Sea Eagles outside back Reuben Garrick has spoken candidly about the emotional and professional factors that led to his decision to leave the club and commit to the Sydney Roosters from the 2027 season. After spending the bulk of his NRL career at Manly, Garrick explained that the move was driven by a desire for personal growth and exposure to a new football system, rather than any dissatisfaction with his former club.
Following the November 1 deadline that allowed players off-contract at the end of 2026 to negotiate elsewhere, Garrick quickly became one of the most sought-after names on the market. Several clubs expressed strong interest, including Manly, the St George Illawarra Dragons, and the Sydney Roosters, while the Perth Bears were also believed to have held discussions. Ultimately, Garrick opted for the Roosters, signing a long-term deal that positions him as a potential replacement for Mark Nawaqanitawase on the wing when he returns to rugby union in 2027.
The versatile back, who is comfortable on the wing, in the centres, or at fullback, acknowledged that the decision was far from easy. Speaking on the Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast, Garrick described the choice as “bloody tough,” reflecting on his deep connection to Manly after nearly eight seasons at the club. He credited the Sea Eagles for giving him his opportunity at NRL level, helping shape him as a player, and providing friendships he expects to carry for life.
Garrick admitted that the most challenging part of the process was informing his teammates of his decision. He highlighted the strong bonds, trust, and loyalty built through years of playing together, noting how difficult it was to have those conversations. Despite the emotional weight, he believes the move is the right step for his development, allowing him to learn new ideas, adapt to a different environment, and continue evolving as a player.
A proven goal-kicker and one of Manly’s most consistent performers in recent seasons, Garrick will leave a significant gap for the Sea Eagles to fill heading into 2027. He has agreed to a three-year contract with the Roosters, covering the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons, marking the next chapter in his career as he looks to challenge himself in a fresh system and at a new club.
