In the aftermath of Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Osasuna, referee José Munuera Montero has addressed the controversy surrounding Jude Bellingham’s red card. Bellingham was sent off in the 39th minute for allegedly directing offensive language toward the official.
In his official statement, Munuera Montero clarified that the decision was based on Bellingham’s use of the phrase “f*** off,” which he interpreted as a direct insult. The referee emphasized that, irrespective of language nuances, such expressions are deemed unacceptable on the field and warrant disciplinary action.
Bellingham, however, contends that his words were misinterpreted. He explained that his utterance was an expression of general frustration, not aimed at the referee. “I didn’t insult him; it was a misunderstanding,” Bellingham stated, urging a review of the incident to amend the official record.

Real Madrid’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, supported Bellingham’s stance, suggesting that the referee may have misconstrued the midfielder’s remarks. Ancelotti highlighted that emotions run high during matches, and certain expressions can be misread, especially across different languages.
This incident has intensified ongoing debates about the consistency of officiating in LaLiga. Some analysts argue that recent refereeing decisions have adversely affected Real Madrid, while others believe that focusing on such controversies detracts from the team’s performance.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Real Madrid managed to secure a draw, with Kylian Mbappé scoring early before Osasuna equalized through an Ante Budimir penalty. The result, however, means that Real Madrid’s lead in LaLiga has narrowed, adding pressure as the season progresses.
As it stands, Bellingham is slated to miss upcoming domestic fixtures due to suspension. However, he remains eligible for Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Manchester City, where his presence will be crucial.
