Barcelona is aiming to bolster their squad in the upcoming transfer window, with much speculation surrounding a potential big-name signing in midfield. However, internal disagreements are complicating this move, as several players believe such a signing is unnecessary at this time.
According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Pedri Gonzalez, along with some of his Barcelona teammates, is working with Deco to persuade the club’s management to dismiss the idea of bringing in Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, a player who has been a top target. Kimmich, whose contract with Bayern Munich expires in June 2024, is expected to leave the club, with interest from several other teams such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, PSG, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Manchester City. However, former Bayern coach Hansi Flick remains confident in his ability to convince Kimmich to join Barcelona.
Despite Kimmich’s potential, many Barcelona players, including Pedri, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Pau Coparsi, do not see him as essential for the team. Instead, there is a growing consensus to prioritize young talent like Marc Casado, who has impressed in midfield since the departure of Sergio Busquets.
As Casado continues to perform well, the need for Kimmich has diminished. Pedri and his teammates view the idea of signing Kimmich as unnecessary, perceiving it as more of a suggestion from Flick than a necessity for the team. Moreover, bringing in Kimmich would require a significant salary increase, which doesn’t align with Barcelona’s current financial priorities.
Additionally, Barcelona has another promising young midfielder in Marc Bernal, a standout talent from their La Masia academy. Although Bernal is recovering from a knee injury, he is expected to return soon and could add more depth to the squad.
