John Lydon, the iconic frontman of Public Image Ltd (PiL) and former Sex Pistols member, recently shared an interesting revelation about his appearance on The Masked Singer. The punk legend admitted that his appearance on the popular ITV show was not just a fun diversion, but also a practical financial move to fund a new PiL album. Lydon, who performed as the character “Yak” on the show, explained that the money he earned from the appearance went directly into recording their next project in Portugal.
During his appearance on This Morning on January 12th, Lydon was candid about his motivations for joining the family-friendly show. “Fun, firstly. Mostly, accurately, the money,” he admitted when asked about his decision to participate. His blunt response underscored the financial benefits of the experience, as the funds from the show allowed PiL to spend a solid month in Portugal working on their next album, followed by a well-deserved break.
Lydon also revealed that his bandmates in PiL were unaware of his participation in The Masked Singer. He shared that they had no idea where the extra money for the recording sessions had come from, though they were curious. “They were wondering where I got the money from the studio,” he laughed, adding that they never made the connection to his time on the show. Lydon’s ability to keep this under wraps highlights the more private aspects of his personal life and professional decisions.
This wasn’t Lydon’s first appearance on The Masked Singer, as he previously participated in the American version of the show in 2021, performing as “Jester.” However, his reasons for joining the U.S. version were deeply personal. Lydon revealed that the appearance was driven by a desire to bring some joy to his wife, Nora Foster, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s at the time. He hoped the experience would be a fun puzzle for her to solve before she passed away in 2023. “She totally went, ‘It’s you,’” Lydon recalled, proud that his wife had guessed correctly despite her illness.
In a more somber note, Lydon shared that, after the death of his wife, none of his former Sex Pistols bandmates reached out to him. Reflecting on this, he said, “I expected some kind of connection when Nora died, but nothing,” highlighting a stark contrast between his current relationships and the bond once shared with his bandmates. Despite this, Lydon is keeping busy with PiL, having just wrapped up their UK tour and preparing for a South American tour in April. Their latest album, End of World, was released in 2023 and received attention for its deep, reflective themes.
Lydon’s story is a reminder that even the most famous musicians have their personal struggles and complex motivations. Whether for financial or deeply emotional reasons, his appearance on The Masked Singer is another chapter in a career that continues to surprise and engage fans worldwide.
