With speculation growing over Real Madrid’s future managerial plans, club legend Guti has backed former midfielder Xabi Alonso as the ideal candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti. Despite the Italian coach’s contract running until 2026, rumors persist that he could leave as early as next season, especially with Brazil’s national team still interested in securing his services.
Alonso’s Rising Reputation
Speaking on El Chiringuito TV, Guti emphasized Alonso’s remarkable achievements at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has transformed the club into a Bundesliga title contender. “What he did last year in Germany is something, at least, to give him a chance to do the same at Real Madrid,” Guti stated.
Alonso took over a Leverkusen side that had never won the Bundesliga, yet under his leadership, they have become one of Germany’s most dominant teams. This success has not gone unnoticed, and his name continues to be linked with a managerial return to Madrid.
Ancelotti’s Future in Question
Guti also suggested that if Alonso were not an option, Ancelotti might have had a stronger case to stay—even if Madrid failed to win silverware this season. “If Xabi Alonso wasn’t behind and the club wasn’t so interested in him coming, it could be that Ancelotti, if he doesn’t win anything this year, would have stayed next year,” he explained.
However, with Alonso’s tactical awareness, player development skills, and deep understanding of Real Madrid’s culture, he is seen as a natural successor. The club’s hierarchy is reportedly seriously considering him for the future, and if Ancelotti departs earlier than expected, Alonso could step in as Madrid’s next head coach.
Will Alonso Make the Jump to Madrid?
While nothing is official yet, the growing support for Alonso—both within the club and among former players—suggests that his appointment is a strong possibility. If Ancelotti does leave, Real Madrid may look to their former midfield maestro to usher in a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu.
