In a heartbreaking turn that has stunned the WNBA community, former Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides passed away this morning at the age of 49. Sources close to the family confirmed the news, stating that Sides succumbed to complications from a sudden illness she had been privately battling in recent months.
Sides, born January 17, 1977, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, leaves behind an enduring legacy in women’s basketball. She served as head coach of the Indiana Fever from 2023 to 2024, guiding the team through a transformative era. Under her leadership, the Fever achieved their first playoff appearance since 2016, finishing the 2024 season with a 20-20 record. She played a pivotal role in developing back-to-back WNBA Rookies of the Year—Aliyah Boston in 2023 and Caitlin Clark in 2024—and earned the league’s Coach of the Month honor in August 2024 for her tactical acumen and player development.
Before her Fever tenure, Sides built an impressive resume as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, and Indiana Fever, as well as in the collegiate ranks at Louisiana Tech and elsewhere. Known for her fiery competitiveness, emphasis on defense, and genuine care for her players, Sides was widely respected for her integrity and passion.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert released a statement: “Christie Sides was a dedicated leader whose impact on the game extended far beyond the court. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and the entire basketball community during this unimaginable time.”
Tributes poured in from former players, including Caitlin Clark, who posted, “Coach Sides believed in us when few did. She taught me more than basketball—she taught resilience and heart. Rest in peace, Coach.”
Funeral arrangements are pending. Sides is survived by her family and a generation of athletes she inspired.
