Kelsey Mitchell Set to Replace Aliyah Boston in the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in ….

In a surprising but timely roster adjustment, USA Basketball has tapped Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell to join the national team for the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from March 11-17, 2026. The move comes after Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston was ruled out due to a right lower-extremity injury sustained during recent Unrivaled league action.

Boston, a cornerstone of the USA’s frontcourt and a key returnee from prior international campaigns, suffered the setback in a Phantom BC game late last month. The injury forced her to miss the remainder of the Unrivaled playoffs, casting doubt on her availability for the qualifiers. With training camp set to begin shortly, USA Basketball acted swiftly to reinforce the squad without disrupting chemistry.

Mitchell, a dynamic scoring threat and three-time WNBA All-Star, brings proven firepower to the group. Known for her elite shooting and quick release, the former Ohio State standout has been in strong form, showcasing her skills in Unrivaled alongside high-profile matchups. Her addition injects perimeter scoring depth to a roster already stacked with talent, including Olympic gold medalists like Kelsey Plum, Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young, plus rising stars Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese.

Head coach Kara Lawson praised the decision: “Kelsey’s ability to stretch defenses and create her own shot is exactly what we need right now. She’s battle-tested and ready to contribute immediately.” Mitchell, who has prior USA Basketball experience in 3×3 formats, expressed excitement about earning her first senior 5×5 call-up. “Representing my country has always been a dream. Stepping in for Aliyah is bittersweet, but I’m here to help this team qualify strong and honor her spot.”

The qualifiers serve as a critical tune-up en route to the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany. With the U.S. already qualified via prior success, the tournament offers valuable reps for blending veterans and newcomers. Boston’s recovery remains the focus, but Mitchell’s inclusion ensures the Americans’ offensive arsenal stays potent.

Fans are buzzing about the potential Mitchell-Clark backcourt tandem, which could light up San Juan. As the team prepares, this change underscores USA Basketball’s depth and adaptability—qualities that have defined their dominance on the global stage.
